Be Humble and patient
Reading: Luke 17:7-10, Luke 18:9-14
Additional readings: Proverbs 6:17, Proverbs 27:2

Today, Jesus told stories so that we may know how to be humble.
Jesus was like:
“There was a servant who worked hard.
He plowed the field and looked after the sheep.
Then there was the owner of the house.
He often worked at home.
Now let’s say that the servant came home from the field.
What would the owner say?
“Come along now and sit down to eat.”
Or, “Thank you for what you obeyed what I what I told you.”
No, the owner would say:
“Prepare my supper.
Then wait on me to finish my eating and drinking.
Then you may eat and drink.”

So, the attitude of the servant should be:
“We are unworthy servants.
We have only done our duty.
We only have done what we have been told.”
This is an attitude of humility.
We will have this attitude when we live in the faith of Jesus.
When we have done everything in the power of Jesus Christ, we would say, “Not to us, not to us, but to you Jesus, all the praise, glory and honor.
You have done it.”

Jesus told another story so that people might be humble and not too much confident of their own righteousness and look down on everyone else.
Jesus was like:
“Two men went up to the temple to pray.
One is a Pharisee and the other is a tax collector.
The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed:
‘God, I thank you that I am not like other bad people like this tax collector.
I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’

“But the tax collector stood at a distance.
He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said:
‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’

“Now, which person is right before God?
God humble those who exalt themselves.
God exalted those who are humbled.
So, God honored the tax collector in this case.”

When we are humble, we move God’s heart.
God loves those who are humble.
God is pleased with this inner activity of our heart.
Then we can move with a pure consciousness that God gives.
God always do something for us.
God helps us to worship God.
God helps us to serve others.
Then we can love like God self-sacrificially.
Then God will be happy with our activities.

You see, God is more concerned with our heart.
Being humble is the heart issue.
Being humble and patient is the inner quality that God honors.
The world may not honor that.
But God does.

Jesus was like:
“The kingdom of God is for those who are humble.
Because they can help people to be found in God and because they can explain the heart of God.
So, we have read two stories on humility.

Jesus explained this through stories because he loved us. (love explains)
Based on these two stories, some people made prayers out of them.
They pray:

“Jesus, the Son of the living God, have mercy on us, a sinner”
“Jesus, splendor of the Father, have mercy on us.”
“Lord Jesus, have mercy on us, and fill us with Your Holy Spirit.”

They repeat this prayer so that they may be found in Jesus.
They pray so that they might have the same humble mind of Jesus.

Let’s pray:
Jesus, help us to honor those who live humbly.
Help us to be patient and humble so that we may see your glory.
In Jesus name, amen.
