(1) Did you know that the Church has a birthday?

Do you know that today is the birthday of the Church?
I am not talking about our local church.
I am talking about the universal church.

Then, how old the Church is?
Our local church is about 40 years old.
But the history of the entire church, the universal church is much older.
The church is almost 2000 years old.

Then why do we say that today is the birthday of the Church?
(2) You know about two thousand years ago, when Jesus was going back to his Father in heaven, Jesus said he would send the Holy Spirit to the people.
Then today, he kept his promise.

(3) Then about this time, the Holy Spirit came to start the church.
The Holy Spirit came to people like you and me.
The Holy Spirit came and filled them with a sense of joy and belonging to God that they had never known before.

So, why do we say that today is the birthday of the Church?
Because the Holy Spirit came today.

(3) Now do you know that you can be filled with the Holy Spirit?
Before we talking about that, let’s talk a little bit about being filled with something.

Have you ever been filled with something?
If you drink a lot of water, you are filled with water, right?
If you eat a lot of good food, you are filled with good food, right?
Have you ever been filled with good food?

If you drink a lot of air, you are filled with air.

So, for example, I brought these: (a glass and a pitcher of water)
Now this cup is about to be filled with water.
Anybody want to fill this cup with water?
Fill the glass with water, please.
Fill it up.
Thank you.

Now this cup is filled with water. (Lift the cup)

Now do you know that we can be also filled with the Holy Spirit like this?
We can be filled with the Holy Spirit.

Now what would happen if we are filled with the Holy Spirit?
What do you think you will feel when you are filled with the Holy Spirit?

You will feel like being filled with joy and love and other good feelings.
You may burst with joy.
You may become the joyous persons.

(3) On Pentecost the students of Jesus were filled with joy and began to praise God in loud voices.
They also felt this joy and peace together.

Then do you know what happen that day?
Thousands of people became believers of Jesus.
They also felt this peace and joy together.

Let me show you something.
(Pour more water on the cup)
What is happening here? (You are spilling)
The cup is overflowing with water.

Do you know that we can be overflowing with the Holy Spirit?
The Holy Spirit can fill us to overflowing.
Then what happens?
Then people around us will experience this peace, joy and the presence of God.
Then if they open their heart for God to come in, they will be filled with the Holy Spirit.
Then they would also become the joyous people who believe in God and are filled with the Holy Spirit.

So, sometimes the best thing that you can do for others is to be filled with the Holy Spirit.
Then because you have this peace and joy, people around you will be saved.
They will also sense your peace and joy.
Then if they open their heart to God and are filled with the Holy Spirit, they will also experience this joy and peace within.

So, pray that the Holy Spirit will come to us and that the Holy Spirit may fill us up so that we may overflow with the Holy Spirit.

Let’s pray:
Welcome Holy Spirit.
Jesus, thank you for giving us the Holy Spirit.
May you fill us up with the Holy Spirit.
May we live with the joy that the Holy Spirit brings.
Because we pray in your name. Amen.
