God is love
Reading: 1 Corinthians 13: 4-8
Blanks: patient, rejoices, protects, hopes
(3) We just read about what love is.
It says that if you want to love, you want to be patient and kind and so on.
Reading this text, what we need to realize is that no one can love like this, except God.
So, when we talk about love in the church, we are not talking about something that we can do.
We are not talking about a strong will to love.
We are not talking about a strong emotion to love either.
Then what do we talk about?
We are talking about a miracle that can happen among us.
We are talking about what Jesus can do through us, because this love is only possible when Jesus loves through us.
So, if we ever love like this, it is not us but God loving through us.
So, we need to read our text like this:
Jesus is patient.
If he lives in me, I can be patient.
Jesus is kind.
If he lives in me, I can be kind.
Jesus does not envy.
If Jesus enables me, I will not envy either.
Jesus does not boast.
If Jesus lives in me, I will not.
Jesus is not proud.
When Jesus lives through me, I will not.
Jesus is not rude, because Jesus is God.
Jesus is not self-seeking, because Jesus is God.
Jesus is not easily angered, because Jesus is God.
Jesus keeps no record of wrongs, because Jesus is God.
So, if Jesus can help me, I can love like this.
See. Jesus has to live in us.
Then we can love like God.
Then we will delight in what is good.
We will rejoice with the truth, understanding God’s wisdom and knowledge.
But why can't we love by our own power?
Why is that?
(2) Because this kind of love is not in us naturally.
This kind of love is something beyond us.
Because this kind of love asks more than what we have and more than what we are.
This kind of love asks us to love in spite of ourselves.
No selfishness is allowed if someone wants to love like this.
So, we cannot love by our own effort.
If we try to love by our own power and by our strong will, we will only struggle and find out that we cannot produce the quality of love that God talks about here.
Then what should we do?
We need to give up, because no matter how hard we try, we cannot produce the quality of love that God talks about here.
(3) But here is the good news.
God is love.
And God can be our source of love.
(3) God can love through us.
Then this kind of love can happen within us.
God can help us love, because with God all things are possible.
(3) For this reason, Jesus sends us the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is the person who helps us to love.
(3) So when the Holy Spirit is in us, this love is possible for us
So, we ask the Holy Spirit to help us.
Then the Holy Spirit enters into our life and enables us to love.
Then we can love, experiencing God’s love.
So, when the Holy Spirit changes us, we can love.
When we are full of the Holy Spirit, we can love like God loves.
(1) For this reason, Jesus sends the Holy Spirit to help the church.
Then the church can love like God.
God is God of everyone.
God loves everyone.
So, when the church experiences the Holy Spirit, the church will use her resources to love everyone like God.
The church will use her money for everyone in the world.
(1) When the Holy Spirit helps our family, our family also can love like that.
When the Holy Spirit helps, every group can love like God.
Then everyone can love God and others and live for God and for others.
But again no one can love like that by their own power.
The Holy Spirit has to empower them to love.
Then this miracle of love can happen.
(3) So, Jesus sends us the Holy Spirit.
Then because of the Holy Spirit God's love shows up in our lives.
Because of the Holy Spirit we are in touch with God’s love.
Because of the Holy Spirit, God’s love finds its way into our relationships.
Because of the Holy Spirit, we are able to love and to be loved.
(3) Remember Jesus heals people and makes them well.
It were miracles, weren’t?
Well, Jesus can help us to produce the quality of love that Jesus talks about here today.
That is another miracle.
Jesus can help us to love like him.
Jesus can give a new life to all of us.
So, if you want to love, you need to look to Jesus, your source of love.
Then receiving his Holy Spirit, you can love like him.
So, let’s pray that this miracle of love can happen in every moment in our life so that we can continually love God and love others just like God loves us.
Jesus, sometimes we wonder about who you are.
From our text, we learn that you are the one who always loves and protects.
You always trust.
You always hope.
You always preserve.
And just like love last forever, you and those who love like you will last forever.
Jesus, your love is real.
May your love is always in this place and in our life.
May your love always lead our families.
May your love take control of our life and lead us to love like you.
In your name, we pray.
The Holy Spirit is seen as a bird because the Holy Spirit connects heaven and earth.
The Holy Spirit makes our heart soft so that we can love.
